Mitochondrial DNA of Porphyra purpurea has been completely sequenced. It is a circular genome, 36,753 bp in size. Two copies of a 219 nucleotide long inverted repeat lie approximately opposite one another. A total of 57 densely packed genes have been identified, which include genes commonly found in other mitochondrial genomes and seven genes characteristic of protist and plant mtDNAs.
