This series comprises photographic material created or collected by the NSW Department of Mineral Resources (and predecessor agencies) documenting various aspects of mining and geological activity throughout New South Wales, as well as Queensland, Victoria and overseas locations including America, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. The range of subjects that the glass negative and lantern slide collection covers is broad. The photographs include images of:-Mining operations and infrastructure (e.g., open cut and underground mines, machinery, mine sites)-Geological features and fieldwork undertaken by departmental geologists-Mineral specimens and core samples-Mining towns and communities.-Departmental staff at work, both in field settings and laboratories-Aerial photographs of mining areas-Teaching aids and diagrams-Geology and scenic geology, palaeontology, and social historyThe photographs span over a century and reflect the development of the mining industry in NSW, particularly coal, gold, copper, and other mineral resources. Many photographs were likely used for internal reporting, public information, or scientific analysis.Some images are accompanied by captioning or metadata such as location, date, and description of subject matter.
