Study of Abundance and Richness of Plant Species in Grassland at Stong Pond

The study took place at York University, Stong Pond on September 21, 2015, 3:00-4:00pm (ET). In the study, quadrats were placed on the grassland, 5 foot steps to the right from the previous quadrat, for 25 replicates (quadrat plots). The quadrat size was 1x1 meters for all the replicates and was the only tool used in this study. Abundance, richness, total coverage of grass and total coverage of vegetation were detected per quadrat. The data were visually examined, and estimated for some parts. Frequent species that appeared within the quadrats were, Aster and Smooth White Aster (<em>Aster spp.</em>), Goldenrod (<em>Solidago</em>), Grasses (<em>Graminoids</em>), Common Milkweed (<em>Asclepias syrica</em>), Queen Anne’s Lace (<em>Daucus carota</em>), Thistle (<em>Sonchus spp. or Cirsium spp.</em>), and Sweet Yellow Clover (<em>Melilotus Offucinalis</em>). Sharom Dhami, lab partner from Group 2, helped to examine this study.
