Crystalline Hybrid Materials for the Treatment of Osteoporosis

A new family of Coordination Polymers (CPs) / Metal-Organic Frameworks MOFs) has been prepared from the self-assembly between alkaline earth metals (e.g., Ca2+, Mg2+ and Sr2+) with different bisphosphonate drugs used for the treatment of osteoporosis, namely alendronate, pamidronate and risedronate (Figure 1).These materials have been used as potential multi-deliverable system for the osteoporosis treatment. Different experimental conditions, e.g. hydrothermal, one-pot and microwave-assisted synthesis, allowed us to isolate a series of new materials. Most of these compounds have been isolated as single-crystals and some as microcrystalline powders. Most of them are composed of thin elongated needles, and our in-house diffractometers have not been effective in the elucidation of their crystal structures.
