This study used a comparative approach to investigate the molecular basis of nickel hyperaccumulation in plants. This was achieved by RNASeq analysis of four populations of Senecio coronatus (Asteraceae) in the Mpumulanga province of South Africa. Three of these populations were growing on Ni-rich serpentine soils (two Ni hyperaccumulator and one non-accumulator), while the fourth population was growing on non-serpentine soil. Separate shoot and root tissue samples were harvested from three individual plants from each population, and total RNA extracted. Comparative transcriptome analysis was carried out to identify genes differentially expressed in hyperaccumulator versus non-accumulator and non-serpentine populations.
