VPRS 1110 Return of Liabilities Incurred

The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).At regular intervals the Commissioner of Roads and Bridges had to forward to treasury a return setting out the liabilities incurred by the Department of Roads and Bridges, Board of Land and Works. These give the number of the Authority, the date of issue, in whose favour it was issued, the parties, the road or district, the votes against which they were chargeable, the maximum amount authorized and any remarks relating to legislation or other special matters. The volumes are marked as being Board Authorities referring to the Board of Land and Works, Department of Roads and Bridges which was the authorising agency for expenditure.
