This series contains the inquest, magisterial inquiries, and inquests dispensed with from the Glebe Coroner for the years 1963 and 1965.Under the Coroners Act, 1960, Act No. 2, a Coroner had the jurisdiction and duty to hold an inquest into deaths of any person within the State of New South Wales which had occurred:In a violent or unnatural manner;Suddenly with cause of death unknown;Under suspicious or unusual circumstances;In respect of whom a medical practitioner has not given a certificate as to the cause of the death;Without being attended by a medical practitioner within the period of three months immediately before their death;While under, or as a result of the administration of, an anaesthetic administered in the course of a medical, surgical or dental operation or procedure, or an operation or procedure of a like nature;Within a year and a day after the date of any accident where the cause of the death is attributable to the accident; orIn an admission centre, or mental hospital, within the meaning of the Mental Health Act, 1958, an institution within the meaning of the Child Welfare Act, 1939, as amended by subsequent Acts, or a prison within the meaning of the Prisons Act, 1952, as amended by subsequent Acts, or in any lockup or otherwise whilst in the lawful custody of any member of the police force. (1)Each file includes particulars of the deceased, the circumstances of death, a copy of the coroner's finding as to the cause of death, a list of witnesses, copies of testimonies and of statements by police or medical officers or others concerned with the reporting of the death. When the inquiry concerns a fire, information includes the address of the dwelling, the names of the occupants and owners, a list of witnesses and the coroner's finding as to the cause of the fire. In some cases there are also copies of testimonies by witnesses and statements by those connected with the reporting of the fire.The few magisterial inquiries held for 1965 were all held within the Metropolitan Police District and have been filed with the prefix 'SD'. Each of these inquiries were overseen by the Stipendiary magistrate. Under the Coroners Act, 1960, Act No. 2, within the Metropolitan Police District "every stipendiary magistrate shall, by virtue of his office, have the jurisdiction, powers and duties of a coroner".
