Clostridium acetireducens is described to form polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), if leucine and acetate are present in media. The formation of polyhydroxybutyrate as a biodegradable plastic is very interesting and the production of this intracellular storage compound is described in only one other clostridial species, namely Clostridium botulinum type E. The sequencing of this organism Clostridium acetireducens should lead to the first described clostridial species with annotated PHB synthesizing genes.
