Jacobaea species all produce pyrrolizidine alkaloids but the composition and concentration are often species-specific. To understand how pyrrolizidine alkaloid diversity comes about and why it is maintained in nature, transcriptome analysis of Jacobaea vulgaris and Jacobaea aquatica grown under controlled conditions were performed to investigate the genetic bases of pyrrolizidine alkaloid biosynthesis.
