资源简介:
The prevalence of misinformation on social media has become a global concern, particularly among youth populations. This study explores the factors influencing the sharing of misinformation on social media among Bangladeshi youths. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 119 youths aged 18 and above through surveys, assessing their demographic backgrounds, motivations, psychological factors, and social influences regarding the sharing of misinformation. Our findings show a strong association between sharing information on social media platforms and social media users’ confirmation bias, existing beliefs, echo chambers, digital news literacy, and social relationships. Moreover, there is an association between regular use of social media, encountering similar content, and a tendency to share that content. People often share content on social media without thinking about whether it is true or false; it may cause harm to people and society just for fun; seeing such content regularly, thinking friends and contacts may appreciate it, will spread thoughts and liking. These findings imply that young people are more inclined to spread when false information supports their preconceived notions, elicits strong emotional responses, or is supported by peers or influential people. This study emphasizes the necessity of focused efforts on platform-level content monitoring and instruction in digital literacy. With special reference to Bangladesh, the study advances our knowledge of misinformation-sharing practices and urges more investigation into changing media environments and how they affect social dynamics and public opinion.
