VPRS 17136 Councillors' Disclosure of Interest Returns

Since 1958 councillors have been required under the Local Government Act 1958 to declare their interests in matters that came before the Council and to abstain from voting on them among other requirements. Under s. 5 (11) of the Local Government (Pecuniary Interests of Councillors) Act 1982 the municipal clerk was required to maintain a register of the pecuniary interests of councillors and some others. Under subsequent legislation, s. 81 (15) and (16) of Local Government Act 1989, destruction of the declarations (returns) and the register was authorized.This register predates the 1989 legislation. It has been retained for its historic and research value.The register contains declarations of the pecuniary and other interests of councillors. Information includes their ownership or interest in property, their employer or line of business, their share holdings, membership of boards of directors, and membership of professional bodies.In the P1 consignment some declarations are cross-referenced to VPRS 3183 Town Clerk's Correspondence Files Series II.Related Sources of Information: In VPRS 8943 Minutes of Council Meetings and VPRS 8911 Proceedings of the Council, it is recorded that certain councillors declared their pecuniary interests at the meetings, but their interests are not recorded in the minutes of the meetings.
