Soil physiochemical properties change during the lifecycle of the rice plant, with downstream effect on paddy soil microbes. Rice paddy soil microbes in turn have a potential role in arsenic transformation, with impact on arsenic in rice grain. The aim of paddy soil management tends to be focussed on improving plant heath and optimising grain yield, but increasingly also considers potential impact on arsenic in grain taking into account also potential impact on paddy soil microbes and soil health. Here we conducted a rice growth experiment under controlled environmental conditions on paddy soil under rice cultivation so that arsenic mobilization and paddy soil microbiology could be studied through the rice life-cycle under different nutritional regimens, with a key focus on the effect on the rice paddy microbiome and arsenic species translocation to the grain.
