<i>Chromobacterium violaceum</i> is a beta-proteobacteria capable of synthesizing and secreting hydrogen cyanide that could be used in leaching gold from electronic scrap material. Efforts have been directed to improve hydrogen cyanide biosynthesis through genetic engineering. This dataset describes pictures of engineered <i>C. violaceum</i> during growth on different agar media at 30 <sup>o</sup>C. One key observation was the discolouration of purple pigment during growth of <i>C. violaceum</i> on formulated minimal salts agar compared to rich agar media like LB and Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA). This could be due to lack of nutritional L-tryptophan in minimal salts agar medium that otherwise would fuel the biosynthesis of violacein antibiotic which endows the <i>C. violaceum</i> colonies with purple colouration on rich agar media.
