ThePresident’s2014Budgetprovidesover$1.7billionfortheNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI),asustainedinvestmentinsupportofthePresident’sprioritiesandinnovationstrategy.Cumulativelytotalingalmost$20billionsincetheinceptionoftheNNIin2001(includingthe2014request),thissupportreflectsnanotechnology’spotentialtosignificantlyimproveourfundamentalunderstandingandcontrolofmatteratthenanoscaleandtotranslatethatknowledgeintosolutionstocriticalnationalissues.NNIresearcheffortsareguidedbytwostrategicdocumentsdevelopedbytheNanoscaleScience,Engineering,andTechnology(NSET)SubcommitteeoftheNationalScienceandTechnologyCouncil(NSTC),the2011NNIStrategicPlanandthe2011NNIEnvironmental,Health,andSafetyResearchStrategy.ThesestrategicdocumentsguidehowNNIagenciesaddressthefullrangeofnanotechnologyresearchanddevelopment,technologytransferandproductcommercialization,infrastructureandeducation,aswellasthesocietalissuesthataccompanyanemergingtechnology.Theinvestmentsin2012and2013andthoseproposedfor2014continuetheemphasisonacceleratingthetransitionfrombasicR&Dtoinnovationsthatsupportnationalpriorities.ThisdocumentprovidessupplementalinformationtothePresident’s2014BudgetandservesastheAnnualReportontheNNIcalledforinthe21stCenturyNanotechnologyResearchandDevelopmentAct(P.L.108-153,15USC§7501).ThereportalsoaddressestherequirementforDepartmentofDefensereportingonitsnanotechnologyinvestments,per10USC§2358(seeAppendixA).Inparticular,thereportsummarizesNNIprogrammaticactivitiesfor2012and2013,aswellasthosecurrentlyplannedfor2014.
