Platid RNA editing in Takakia. Takakia lepidozioides

RNA editing sites in bryophytes are diverse, ranging from zero in the liverwort Marchantia to almost 1,000 sites in the hornworts. We identified the extraordinary frequency of RNA editing for the plastid genome of an enigmatc moss Takakia lepidozioides with transcriptome data. We propose a new hypothesis for the close correlation between the occurrence of monoplastidic vegetative tissue and intensive RNA editing in the plastid genome of the early diverging group of land plants including Takakia, hornworts, and lycophytes, from an evolutionary perspective.
