The canvas model is a deterministic theory of fundamental physics. Given eight primitives, four pillars, and one number—the initial smoothness of the pre-geometric canvas—everything that happens is determined. Every galaxy, every planet, every thought. This sounds like it eliminates freedom. It doesn't. The theory contains three distinct sources of openness within its deterministic framework. The first freedom is the random seed. The initial smoothness is not chosen by any law. It is the one free variable. Change it, and you get a different universe. Same laws, different history. The seed is the freedom of initial conditions. The laws are necessary. The seed is contingent. The laws are the part we can discover and prove. The seed is the part we can only measure. The second freedom is the open past. In the canvas model, quantum fields exist as open waves—extended over multiple possibilities—until a measurement collapses them into a definite outcome. The past is not fully written until it is observed. This openness is not a violation of determinism—the wave evolves deterministically—but it creates a genuine experience of freedom at the level of observation. The wave is the freedom of unsettled history. From our perspective—the perspective of observers within the emergent spacetime—the openness is real. The sub-voxel phase is inaccessible. We cannot know, even in principle, what the outcome will be until the measurement occurs. The past becomes definite only when the wave collapses, and we are the ones closing it. The third freedom is the unknown beyond. The theory draws a boundary around what can be known from inside the universe. What lies outside—the origin of the seed, the nature of whatever set the initial conditions, the possibility of intervention from beyond—is not constrained. The beyond is the freedom of the unanswerable. The canvas model cannot rule this out. It also cannot confirm it. It simply marks the boundary and stays on its side. This is intellectual honesty: a complete physical theory should describe everything within its domain, and be honest about where its domain ends. The pragmatic response: Whether or not your choices are predetermined, you still have to make them. The machine needs you to run. The only rational response to determinism is to choose the path that leads to what you want. Not because you are metaphysically free, but because choosing is how the universe computes the future, and you are the part of the universe that does the choosing. And because the beyond is unknown, your choices may have effects you cannot foresee—rippling outward into whatever lies outside the machine, and returning in ways you cannot predict. The universe is a wave generator, producing ever more complex waves, from fields to particles to chemistry to biology to psychology to choice. You are one of those waves, collapsing as you go. The collapse is deterministic. But the wave is yours. And what the wave sends beyond the boundary—that is yours too. Why This Matters The question of free will in a deterministic universe has haunted philosophy for millennia. The canvas model does not pretend to resolve it in the abstract. It does something more useful: it shows that determinism and freedom are not opposites. They are different levels of description. At the fundamental level, everything is determined. At the level of human experience, choice is real, deliberation is meaningful, and the future is genuinely open. This paper is for anyone who has ever felt trapped by the idea that determinism makes their choices meaningless. It argues the opposite: your choices are exactly what determinism looks like from the inside. The feeling of freedom is not an illusion. It is the experience of being a wave that hasn't collapsed yet. The wave is real. The possibilities are real. The collapse is how the universe computes the future, and you are the part of the universe doing the computing. The three freedoms—the seed, the wave, and the beyond—are not loopholes in determinism. They are the structure of the universe as experienced from within. They allow for contingency, for agency, and for the honest acknowledgment that there is always more than what we can know. And they lead to a practical conclusion: act as if you are free. Choose what you want. Not because you are metaphysically free, but because choosing is how the universe works, and you are the universe choosing.
