资源简介:
This corpus-based study investigates the nuanced usage of the English synonyms "famous," "well-known," and "outstanding" by examining their meanings, collocations, and semantic fields using data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The study aims to clarify the subtle differences in these adjectives to aid English language learners in making precise word choices. Definitions from reputable dictionaries were compared with real-world usage in COCA to identify discrepancies and nuances. The analysis of 300 concordance lines for each adjective revealed distinct collocational patterns and semantic preferences, highlighting their unique connotations and contextual applications. "Famous" often denotes broad recognition and historical significance, "well-known" implies general familiarity and respect within specific fields, and "outstanding" emphasizes exceptional quality. These findings enhance understanding of synonym distinctions, contributing to more accurate and effective communication in English. Future research should explore grammatical patterns and genre influences to provide a more comprehensive understanding of synonym usage.
