This project works with two strains of microalgae, Scenedesmus obliquus strain HTB1 and Nannochloropsis oceanica strain IMET1, studying the mechanisms involved in scrubbing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). We developed a high alkalinity, high pH system that efficiently scrubbed high concentrations of carbon dioxide (5-10%) from power plant flue gas using photosynthesis-driven biomass production and calcium carbonate precipitation. Metagenomics sequencing recovered 7 high quality metagenome assemble genomes (MAGs) of interest.
