Modeling of frost-prone areas for Eucalyptus in São Paulo

Frosts have caused concerns to Eucalyptus growers in south-central Brazil. The supposed rarity of frost events in tropical and subtropical environments makes their impacts even more important for foresters. Detecting and modeling the effects of frost on forest plantations at the landscape scale is a powerful tool for mitigating the tree damage. Field observations and orbital surveys before and after the critical frost events of 2021 made it possible to develop a frost incidence model for Eucalyptus in the east-central region of the state of São Paulo. The incidence map was operationalized in 5 classes of frost's propensity: Very low (0-20%), Low (20-40%), Medium (40-60%), High (60-80%), Very high (80-100%). The frost incidence map for the Eucalyptus in the state of São Paulo was shared for use and applications by foresters, managers, and researchers in the forestry sector.
