The dataset in the repository refers to friction measurements of powdered rock samples from the Dead Sea carried out in a low to high velocity rotary shear (LHVR) apparatus (Durham University, UK) in 2014-2015. The dataset comprises rock mechanics data collected during 14 friction experiments performed in a low to high velocity rotary shear (LHVR) apparatus at room temperature, seismic (1.3 m s^-1) slip rates, normal loads ranging from 1-18 MPa and under room-humidity and brine-saturated (drained) conditions. The material tested was obtained from the powdering of the Lisan Formation rock samples (Dead Sea, Israel), containing between 40-60% aragonite (grain size < 15 μm), 30-50% clay (mixed layer illite-smectite and kaolinite), and up to 10% quartz, gypsum and calcite (grain size < 100 μm). The samples used for the laboratory friction experiments performed at Durham University Rock Mechanics laboratory, whose results are included in the data files, were collected during a field campaign in the locality of Masada (Israel) in 2012.
