Lightning Attachment Points on an F-106B Aircraft in NASA's Storm Hazards Program

This dataset contains 3-dimensional lightning attachment points for the configurations detailed in NASA's studies on lightning attachment patterns during the Storm Hazards Program in 1980 [1] and 1981 [2]. MATLAB's image processing tools were used to isolate and extract 2D strike attachment points from the images in these reports. A high-fidelity mesh of the F-106B was re-oriented to align with the grayscale images through an iterative process. The 2D extracted attachment points were subsequently projected onto the re-configured 3D mesh of the aircraft with meticulous image warping to minimize information loss and closely replicate the original images.
