Microscopic images of regolith simulant with ilmenite content

OverviewThe dataset consists of 22,176 images of simulant regolith samples containing ilmenite in concentrations ranging from 1% to 15% (in 1% increments). It is designed to support vision-based methods for analyzing ilmenite content in regolith-like materials.Dataset preparation Samples were prepared using a controlled, multi-step process:Mixing procedure – Sand and ilmenite were combined using the conical mixing method. A cone of material was formed, then quartered. Each quarter was mixed separately for ~5 minutes before being recombined into a homogeneous sample.Concentration levels – Fifteen distinct mixtures were created, each with ilmenite concentrations from 1% to 15%.Image Acquisition – Images of the prepared samples were captured using a DLT-Cam PRO 5 MP camera equipped with a 200× zoom microscope lens (model 074F-97376) and a ring illuminator with 16 RGB LEDs, all mounted on a CNC machine setup.
