This dataset provides the source data needed to reproduce graphs and charts for the four figures found in the main text of: Rivoire, L., Curbelo, J., and Linz, M., 2026, Tracking jet streams as Lagrangian objects, Commun. Earth Environ.
Each file corresponds to a figure in the paper. Files are in MATLAB's native .mat format, produced with MATLAB 23.2.0.2485118 (R2023b) Update 6. See the documentation: https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/import_export/mat-file-versions.html. To read the files with Python:

All variables are given descriptive names, including which panel they correspond to in the figures. For example, in fig_1.mat, variable 'jet_left_panel_B' provides the jet axis for the left side of panel B. In fig_4.mat, variable 'KDE_F' is a MATLAB structure (for Python users, analogous to a list of dictionaries whose values are NumPy arrays) and provides the estimated probability density values for the corresponding x-values (the latitude or wind speed grid) in 'KDE_XF'. Within the structures, data for the Eulerian "wind-based" method are denoted with "W", data for the Lagrangian method are denoted with "M" (the "M" function), and data for the Eulerian "theta-based" method are denoted with "PT" (theta is Potential Temperature). See the full detail of variables and attributes at the end of this document.
Data from figure 2 panel C are not provided and can be more efficiently reproduced using equation (2) in the paper. This dataset is intended solely for figure reproduction and does not include the full underlying analysis pipeline or raw input data. All physical quantities use the same units and conventions as in the published figures (e.g., latitude in degrees, wind speed in m/s). Missing values are represented as NaNs.
