In sum, our full sample set consists of 23,469 observations with 3,705 unique firms. Firm-level and province-level data is collected from the China Stock Market & Accounting Research (CSMAR) database (Chen et al., 2009, 2022; Cong et al., 2019; Gul et al., 2010; Lee and Zhong, 2022; Wang et al., 2021). We aggregate the patent variables at the firm level by summing up the total number of citations made to patents created by a firm in a specific calendar year. All continuous variables are winsorized at the top and bottom 1%.
