DR12 is the final data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), encompassing all data acquired by SDSS up to July 14, 2014. SDSS-III data is derived from observations conducted between 2008 and 2014 using the legacy wide-field cameras, multi-object fiber spectrographs, near-infrared high-resolution spectrographs, and a classical optical interferometer. As of now, all SDSS-III data has been fully released. Compared to previous data releases, this DR12 release adds over one million new galaxy and quasar spectra from the 3000-square-degree Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) footprint, which amounts to more than three times the number of H-band stellar spectra obtained by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. It also includes repeated high-precision radial velocity measurements for 5500 stars from the MARVELS survey. Furthermore, APOGEE data products cover measurements of 15 elemental abundances for each individual star. In summary, SDSS-III adds the following new datasets: 5200 square degrees of ugriz photometric data; 155,520 spectra from 138,099 stars in SEGUE-2; 2,497,484 spectra from the BOSS survey covering 9376 square degrees, including 1,372,737 galaxies, 294,512 quasars, and 247,216 stars; 618,080 spectra from 156,593 stars in the APOGEE survey; and 197,040 spectra from 5513 stars in the MARVELS survey. Since its first light in 1998, SDSS has acquired ugriz five-band photometric data for one-third of the entire sky and over five million spectroscopic observations.
