We compiled soil water-filled pore space and soil water content data, along with O<sub>2</sub> concentration measurements, from four sites within global cold and wet ecoystems to verify the impact of soil water status on O<sub>2</sub> diffusion in soils. Results from 21 laboratory incubation experiments were also collected to examine the effects of high (aerobic) and low (anaerobic) soil O<sub>2</sub> conditions on soil CO<sub>2</sub> emissions. Meanwhile, we compiled eddy covariance and chamber-based measurements of ecosystem respiration and soil respiration, along with observations of soil water content or ground water table level, from 107 filed sites to analyze impacts of soil water status on soil CO<sub>2</sub> emissions at ecosystem level.
