To investigate the role of bacterial urease in microbial amino acid synthesis, we administered isotopically labeled 15N2-urea in drinking water to control mice colonized with conventional murine gut microbiota, mice treated with antibiotics (ABX) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to deplete their endogenous gut microbiota, and mice treated with ABX/PEG and then inoculated with Altered Schaedler Flora (ASF), a defined consortium of 8 murine commensal bacteria with minimal urease gene content.
