Severe Malaria Affects Gut Homeostasis

The goal of this study was to identify how severe malaria differentially modulates host gut homeostasis compared to mild malaria. It has been previously shown that malaria can transiently modify the gut microbiota, but these findings have not been placed in the context of severe malaria. Additionally, it has been shown that the gut microbiota composition alone can modulate the severity of malaria. Understanding the complex interplay between the host gut homeostasis and the burden of malaria infection will help lead to better treatment and control of the disease.
