Techniques and data: Woodlot Dataset 3

In order to obtain information, data was recorded from an area within a woodlot, where there was an abundance of densly populated trees. By using a transect measuring tape, all continuous data was recorded. Every instance an adult tree was encountered (which was deemed to be adult by having a diameter of at least a hands width), it was paired with another adult tree closest to it in any direction along the transect. The distance from each pair of tree was recorded using a measuring tape (inches). Following this, the diameter of each tree was recorded roughly by using the measuring tape and measuring the trees diameter (inches) at chest height. Finally, each tree under examination was to be rated on a scale from 0-2, with 0 being a dead tree, 1 being a living tree and 2 being a flourishing tree with a full canopy of leaves. These steps were to be repeated for 10 different pairs of adult trees. A tree was deemed to be dead if it contained all dead or dying leaved, missing branches and decaying. A living tree was deemed to have living green leaves as well as some dead foliage. A fully flourishing tree showed a full canopy of leaves, no decaying or dead leaves and no missing branches. Some restrictions for this data was to make sure to only measure adult trees and not saplings.
