As sequence data and computational power become increasingly affordable, individual laboratories now have the ability to assemble novel genomes. We assembled the draft genome for the soybean aphid (Aphis glycines), using a hybrid approach. This represents the first genome from the agricultural pest rich genus Aphis and the smallest genome amongst aphids, at 317.2Mb. The final assembly showed high continuity and completeness, measuring 302.9Mb (95% predicted genome size), a scaffold N50 of 174,505bp, and 92% of A. glycines transcripts mapping to the assembly.
