The separation of anaerobic digestion into two stages has proven to be a practical solution to overcome the limitations of the process. A system coupling the methanogenic step after acidogenesis is recommended to degrade many kinds of substrate. To obtain optimized conditions for the second stage of the process, a Central Composite Rotational Design (DCCR) and response surface methodology (RSM) were applied, delimiting the dilution of the fermentative effluent of the first stage as one of the analyzed variables (HFE 35.7% a 100%), and also the ratio of NaHCO3 to substrate (0.0 a 0.60 gNaCHO3 gCOD).
