This dataset pertains to a research study based on a quasi-experimental between-groups design to examine the impact of including ChatGPT in the drafting phase of a composition course on the argumentative writing skills of a cohort of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students at a public university in Morocco. The results indicated that the experimental group (n=84) performed significantly better than the control group (n=76) in five out of eight criteria for standard argumentative essays. Additionally, it was discovered that the students' demographics did not play a role in the connection between the AI-driven intervention and the quality of argumentative writing. However, the frequency of using AI-operated tools did have an impact. The results of this study have significant implications for theory, research, and practice, which are thoroughly discussed in subsequent sections.
