The CURE-COMM Framework: A guide for infusing CUREs with science communication
AbstractIn this study, we performed a systematic literature review to understand how course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) might foster scientific communication (SciComm) skills. First, we explored the pedagogical strategies used in developing SciComm skills in undergraduates. Subsequently, we examined the literature on pedagogical strategies used during the implementation of CUREs to decipher points of intersection among pedagogical strategies used in both CUREs and to foster SciComm skills. The review revealed that blogging, infographics, analysing data, analysing scientific literature, increasing exposure to writing contexts, providing multiple opportunities to present findings orally or in written form, and providing feedback are used to teach SciComm skills. Of these, analysing experimental data, existing literature analyses, multiple written assignments-manuscripts, proposals, and lab notebooks, oral and written presentation of findings and constructive feedback are commonly used in the implementation of CUREs. We posit there is an underutilisation of pedagogies that support SciComm skills in the implementation of CUREs. To harness the impact of CUREs, we claim there should be more explicit SciComm skill development, particularly regarding communication with lay audiences, which would better prepare future scientists as change agents in society. This study concludes with a framework for harnessing the power of CUREs to develop SciComm skills.
