The Adoption of Squash-Merging in GitHub Projects – Scripts and Descriptive Statistics

This artifact is the replication package for studying the prevalence of squash-merging in open-source software projects, used in the ASE-NIER 2026 publication "The Ground Is Shifting: A Reflection on the Foundations of Software Measurement" by Thomas Bock, Audris Mockus, and Bogdan Vasilescu. It consists of two parts: - Part A contains scripts that identify squash-merged commits in two complementary ways: in depth for a small set of exemplary GitHub repositories, and at scale across the entire World-of-Code dataset. - Part B contains the resulting data, namely descriptive statistics and plots for squash-merge adoption in GitHub projects.
