To investigate the effects of plantation density on growth characteristics (diameter at breast height, tree height, and stem volume) and conventional wood properties, a study was conducted using 38-year-old experimental plantations of Xiaohei poplar with four distinct planting densities in the semi-arid region of Northeast China: 2 m × 2 m, 3 m × 3 m, 4 m × 4 m, and 5 m × 5 m. Growth traits and wood properties of Xiaohei poplar under each density were measured and analyzed. The results revealed significant differences in both growth and wood traits of Xiaohei poplar across varying planting densities. Correlation analysis further demonstrated that except for wood density, which exhibited a significant negative correlation with growth traits, all other wood mechanical traits showed significant positive correlations with growth traits. For stem volume prediction, the regression weights directly influencing growth and wood traits ranged from -0.178 to 0.724. Among growth traits, diameter at breast height (0.724) and tree height (0.612) exerted the most substantial impacts on stem volume. Stand yield and benefit analysis indicated that the 2 m × 2 m density yielded the highest stand volume (610 m³ per hectare), comprehensive value and economic benefit, while the 5 m × 5 m density achieved the maximum individual tree stem volume growth. This suggests that the 2 m × 2 m planting regime can achieve a high volume per hectare, whereas the 5 m × 5 m spacing can yield a greater individual tree stem volume.
