The evolutionary origin of butterfly eyespots has been a mystery. How and where does this novel trait evolve is still a mystery. Here in this study, we performed a comparative transcriptome analysis between eyespot and multiple other body tissues and identified eyespot shares transcriptome profile close to the antenna. Followed by showing that eyespot and antenna share more open chromatin regions comparing eyespot and other tissues.
