Zoning of the Transboundary Vosges Biosphere Reserve of North-Pfälzerwald (2022-2032)

Updated zoning during the 2021 10-year periodic review of the North-Pfälzerwald Transboundary Vosges Biosphere Reserve. This covers the Northern Vosges Regional Natural Park and the Biosphärenreservat Pfälzerwald (Palatinate Biosphere Reserve). Periodic review validated by the International Coordinating Board of the MAB Programme on 17 June 2022. Obtained by merging national zoning with border harmonisation. The external limit on the French side comes from the merger of the boundaries of the communes of the IGN Topo comic book (2019 version) with cutting according to the road network at the level of Phalsbourg and Wissembourg, municipalities in part only on the territory of the PNRVN. German data come from Geoportal der Naturschutzverwaltung Rheinland-Pfalz (Lanis) and Biosphärenreservat Pfälzerwald. **Next update published in 2032.** **A biosphere reserve is organised into 3 types of areas, where protection, maintenance and development objectives are divided:** \- Central **areas**, with the function of nature protection and to be protected by national legislation (classified protected areas). \- The **buffer zones**, which surround or adjoin the central areas. These are areas of sustainable development where production activities must remain compatible with ecological principles, including environmental education, recreation and scientific research; \- The **transition zones** (also known as “cooperation”) lend themselves to various activities. The external border is always flexible.
