Breakdown of global GHG emissions from oil and gas operations 2022, by activity

Global oil and gas operations produced 5.1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2022. Upstream and downstream methane emissions accounted for nearly half of this total, and nearly two-thirds of total scope 1 and scope 2 emissions for natural gas.
