High costs of capital hinder the equity, speed and mitigation potential of renewable energy deployment globally: Underlying data

High costs of capital are a substantial barrier to renewables deployment in developing countries, but there is limited empirical data showing how financing costs vary across countries and between technologies. Here, using bespoke estimates for over 200 countries, we assess the impact of national costs of capital on renewable levelised costs of electricity (LCOE) through use of a geospatial model for wind and olar power. The LCOE, annual technical potential and estimates cost of capital are provided at a high geospatial granularity, using country- and technology-specific costs of capital at over 96,000 gridpoints in 2026. To improve the utility of our modelling, we provide the underlying data in this repository, covering: a) estimated cost of capital, b) LCOE under the estimated CoC, c) LCOE under the average cost of capital in advanced economies and d) annual technical potential at each location, for both wind and solar power. Updated to include modelled results under 1) new regional and national deployment costs for 2024 produced by IRENA (Renewable Power Generation Costs 2024) and 2) estimated costs of capital for 2026.
