资源简介:
I study whether and when electoral outcomes generate anti-democratic grievances on the part of candidates. I evaluate this question with a three-wave panel survey of candidates for local legislative office conducted during the 2024 Indonesian election. I find a modest decline in trust in electoral institutions across all candidates following the election, with a larger drop for losers than for winners. I observe a similar decline in support for democracy over the course of the campaign, on average, but detect no difference in this trend across winners and losers. The decline in trust among losers is concentrated among older male candidates with high initial expectations of victory. The findings improve our understanding of the extent to which elections effectively metabolize grievances while also unearthing the limited conditions under which politicians develop beliefs antagonistic to democratic norms after defeat.
