The genus Phaeobacter has been only recently formally recognized and encompasses marine microorganisms widely distributed in various surface and deep oceans. It is likely that the diversity of this group remains to be described. Its ability to produce the tropodithietic acid antibiotic is also of medical importance. To initiate the analysis of Phaeobacter lifestyle and diversity at a genomic scale, we sequenced and assembled the genome of the recently described alphaproteobacteria Phaeobacter leonis.
