From Awareness to Action: Exploring How Translators’ Self-Awareness of Intercultural Competence Enhances Intercultural Mediation

This thesis explores how translators use self-awareness to move beyond simply recognising cultural differences to actively helping people from different cultures understand one another. It views translation as a form of intercultural communication and highlights the role of translators as cultural mediators in real professional contexts. Drawing on established intercultural competence and Cultural Intelligence frameworks, the study demonstrates how reflective self-awareness can support translators in making informed intercultural decisions. The thesis argues for the stronger integration of practical and reflective intercultural skills into translator education and professional development.
