Data was collected at 3:00 p.m. on September 25, 2014 at the Danby Woods located at York University Campus, Toronto, ON. The sky was clear and sunny, and the temperature was 23°C. This dataset was collected by Rajbir Ghuman and Alexander Karakatsanis, R. Ghuman recorded the numbers while A. Karakatsanis measured the variables. The purpose to collect this data was to obtain skills in field data collection with plants. Specifically, this dataset includes tree diameters at breast height (DBH), condition of trees and distance between trees in different areas of the woodlot. Potentially, this data could be used to compare the condition of trees located at the edge of the woodlot vs. the trees deeper in the woodlot. It is predicted that the trees at the edge of the woodlot will have a greater DBH and bigger canopies than trees that are closer to the center of the woodlot, because there is more access to sunlight at the edge. A transect measuring tape was placed from the south-west edge of the woodlot, towards the center of the woodlot (~30 meters). Starting from the edge of the woodlot, walked along the path of the transect measuring tape placed on the floor and every time an adult tree was encountered, the DBH of the tree, the condition of the tree, and the distance between the tree and the closest adult tree were recorded. The DBH of the closest adult tree was also measured and recorded, along with the condition of this tree. Distances were measured by placing a transect measuring tape on the floor, from the base of one tree-trunk to the base of the other tree-trunk, and recorded in meters. DBH was measured by wrapping a transect measuring tape around the tree trunk at breast height (~1.50 m from the ground), and recorded in meters. Tree condition was measured from a scale of 0-2, which is further explained in the metadata. This was repeated for the first 10 trees encountered while walking along the transect measuring tape placed on the floor, resulting in data for 10 pairs of trees.
