Code for Estimating the Geographical Extent of Tropical Upper-Tropospheric Troughs (TUTTs) in Chang et al. (2025)- Journal of Climate

This dataset includes the algorithm used to estimate the areal extent of tropical upper-tropospheric troughs (TUTTs) for the paper entitled: "Future Projection of Tropical Upper Tropospheric Troughs and Implications for Tropical Cyclone Activity" submitted to Journal of Climate in 2025. File descriptions: · hgt.mon.mean_1979_2014_HadGEM3-GC31-MM.nc: Input data containing the climatological long-term (1979–2014) monthly-mean geopotential height at 850 hPa, 500 hPa, and 200 hPa, simulated by the HadGEM3-GC31-MM historical simulation. · Output_TUTT_positions_final_Ridge_max_20_30N.py: Main algorithm used to estimate the areal extent of Pacific and Atlantic TUTTs from the HadGEM3-GC31-MM historical simulation. The algorithm outputs several files: · HadGEM3-GC31-MM-tutt_area-1979-1979JASO-Ug_2.0.txt: Areal extent (unit: 10⁴ km²) of Pacific and Atlantic TUTTs. · HadGEM3-GC31-MM-tutt_Area_lat-1979-1979JASO-Ug_2.0.txt / HadGEM3-GC31-MM-tutt_Area_lon-1979-1979JASO-Ug_2.0.txt: Central latitude and longitude of TUTTs. · HadGEM3-GC31-MM_tutt_ref.latitude-1979-1979JASO-Ug_2.0.txt: Reference latitude (see details in the Methods section 2d of the manuscript).
