Two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated to achieve SNEDPR. There were three operational stages. In stage 1 (days 1~26), both reactors were operated under the same conditions to cultivate the phosphorus removal sludge. In stages 2 (days 26~57) and 3 (days 57~82), intermittent and continuous aeration were used for SBR1 and SBR2, respectively, to investigate the performance of SNEDPR under different aeration modes. In addition, adjusting the influent ammonia nitrogen concentration or anaerobic hydraulic retention time varied the competitive positions of DPAOs and DGAOs, which enabled the analysis of their ecological niches in the SNEDPR process.
