Similar to the marine bacterial species Desulfocapsa sulfexigens, the freshwater bacterium Desulfocapsa thiozymogenes is capable of sulfur disproportination. This process is highly relevant for the sulfur cycle in the environment. Comparing D. thiozymogenes' genome with genomes of other sulfur disproportinating microbes will help getting to know this still cryptic process.
