The Fire Product: Fire Products over Nicaragua was part of the
International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme Data and Information
System (IGBP-DIS) Regional Satellite Fire Data Compilation CD-ROM.
The products presented contain active fire locations retrieved from
AVHRR NOAA-14 satellite images captured in Managua, Nicaragua, using a
Local Application for Remote Sensing Techniques (LARST) antenna
receiver and processing system. The images were captured and processed
at the Direccion General Forestal of the Ministerio del Ambiente y
Recursos Naturales (MARENA) in collaboration with the Natural
Resources Institute (UK) within the framework of a project funded by
the UK Overseas Development Administration.
The data products comprise active fires (hot pixels) as observed by
AVHRR NOAA-14 over Nicaragua, and parts of its neighbour countries,
during the dry season January-May 1996. The data set is a simple
ASCII file consisting in a list of locations and associated dates and
times of active fires (hot pixels). Each record corresponds to a
detected fire pixel, giving the latitude, the longitude, the date and
time of the fire. Maps in GIF format show the distribution of active
fires (hot pixels) on a monthly basis.
