• This study was carried out to identify the fungal degraders of Low-Density Polyethene (LDPE) and to investigate the effect of isolated Penicillium sp. and Fusarium sp. on biodegradation of LDPE.• The aims of this study were to determine the effectiveness of biodegradation of 20-micron polyethene by Penicillium sp. and Fusarium sp. using weight loss measurement and by observing images of polythene films under light microscope and SEM.• Mean percentages of weight reduction in LDPE after 90 days incubation with the selected fungi did not show an appreciable decrease in weight due to the short incubation time and the incubation method which was followed.• However, the images obtained from the light microscope and scanning electron microscope showed micro cracks on the LDPE films after 90 days of incubation with fungal isolates
