The invention relates to a method for activating a functional layer of a coating material， the method having the following steps: providing a functional layer that can be made adhesive by energy input; supplying a coating material to a workpiece that is to be coated; at least partially activating the functional layer by gassing the functional layer with a heated gas， the heated gas being enriched with water and preferably being air enriched with water.
