Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in neonates is a severe cerebral dysfunction affecting approximately 1 in 200 newborns. Since the introduction of therapeutic hypothermia in 2005, progress has been made, yet many infants still experience poor prognoses, with 35%–50% suffering from adverse neurocognitive outcomes. The limited capacity to early identify high-risk infants and accurately evaluate treatment outcomes underscores the critical demand for biomarkers that facilitate early and accurate prognostication. The inaugural HIE Brain MRI Challenge was first hosted in 2023, focusing on lesion segmentation in infant brain MRI. The 2024 MICCAI Challenge has further expanded its scope to include two core tasks: 1) lesion segmentation in infant brain MRI; 2) prediction of neurocognitive outcomes at 2 years of age using infant brain MRI. The newly added tasks carry substantial clinical significance.
